How to drink a sustainable cup of coffee…
I LOVE coffee, but like everything, coffee production has a huge impact on the environment. According to the Water Footprint Network, the global average water footprint of one 8oz cup of coffee is 72 gallons—that’s more than four eight-minute showers’ worth of water. Also who just drinks 8oz? A venti coffee at Starbucks is 20oz! That’s a lot of water . In addition, for every cup of coffee consumed, about one square inch of rainforest is destroyed, plus coffee farms lead to chemical runoffs in rivers, biodiversity loss, and soil erosion…I think you get it. Does this mean you have to stop drinking coffee? Nope! It just means when you purchase coffee you need to put thought into where your coffee comes from, how it’s grown, and how the growers are treated. I’ll make it easy!
When purchasing coffee look for the following things- Shade grown, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Organic, Fair Trade…go to the roasters websites and read their sustainability reports. little changes make a big difference! If you need recommendations, I’ve done the research!
